Thermal management plays a critical role in reducing the heat generated by the electric motor in a battery electric vehicle (BEV). This creates a challenge to maintain optimal temperature, requiring additional heating for passengers at the expense of range. Fast charging further drives the need for precise thermal management.
Since many charging networks use DC fast charging stations with power up to 350 kW, batteries must operate within a narrow temperature window to maximize charging power.
Effective thermal management prevents problems such as demagnetization, insulation aging, reduced efficiency, and even motor burnout. It also extends battery life and prevents thermal runaway.
Battery cooling and heating systems are critical. Keeping batteries cool helps extend battery life, but it is also key to preventing thermal runaway and ensuring safety. This means that the thermal management of the battery is a key factor in the range, performance and safety of an electric vehicle - they are cooled or heated by electric coolant pumps, coolant valves, cooling fans and electric/PTC heaters.

PTC Heater Technology
PTC heaters are self-regulating heating devices that ensure efficiency and safety. PTC heater modules not only improve efficiency, but also prioritize safety by preventing self-overheating. Since the current decreases as the temperature increases, heating stops automatically. This makes PTC heater modules the preferred solution for heating batteries for fast charging or driving in cold environments.
